Last week Mendip District Council held a Health and Wellbeing week with daily afternoon Dementia Friends sessions taking place for council staff and partners across the Shape Mendip site. More than 75 people attended the one hour sessions.

Dementia Friends Information Sessions are run by volunteer Dementia Friends Champions, who are trained and supported by the Alzheimer's Society. During the sessions participants learn more about dementia and how they can help to create Dementia Friendly Communities.

After each Dementia Friends session staff were asked to consider how they were going to turn their understanding of dementia into a practical action. Simple pledges could include:

  • Getting in touch and staying in touch with someone they know living with dementia

  • Volunteering for an organisation that helps people with dementia

  • Campaigning for change, eg by signing up to Alzheimer's Society campaigns to improve the lives of people affected by dementia

  • Wearing their badge and telling 5 friends about the Dementia Friends initiative

  • Carrying out a personal action, eg being more patient when out in the community

More than 70 Mendip staff made a pledge and have signed up to be Dementia Friends.

Nataliya Wills, Community Health Coordinator and Policy Officer at Mendip District Council, said: "As a council we are committed to supporting the Dementia Friends initiative and it was encouraging that so many of our staff signed up to take part and pledge to become a Dementia Friend."
