Are you ready for the HMO licensing changes coming next month?
Mendip District Council is reminding all landlords that the deadline is rapidly approaching for licensing houses in multiple occupation (HMOs).
Properties with five or more people regardless of how many storeys must be licensed and landlords need to get an application submitted to Mendip District Council before Monday, October 1 2018.
Together with the licensing requirements are new space conditions for bedrooms, a one person bedroom minimum size is 6.51m2 for a two person bedroom the minimum size is 10.22m2.
It is an offence to run an HMO without a licence and could result in prosecution or a Civil Penalty which will result in a fine of up to £30,000.
Landlords who believe their property will now be classed as an HMO and therefore require a licence are advised to contact the Private Sector Housing Team at Mendip District Council by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 01749 341490 for advice.
The current fee for a five year licence in Mendip for a five bed house is £375 plus £30 per extra room.
