Purdah Content - Guidance for elected members and LA Staff

Information on the pre-election period informally known as "purdah".

Introduction/Background

Formal notice of the local elections (District and Parish) will be published on Monday 18 March 2019.  The formal legal restrictions will apply to Council actions from 26 March 2019 until the close of polls on 2nd May 2019.  However, as the Notice of Election is being published a week early, it is prudent that they are applied from this earlier date. This pre-election period is informally known as "purdah".

With the announcement of European Parliamentary elections the 'purdah' period will now be extended until after the European Parliamentary election closes, at 10pm on polling day, 23 May 2019.

It is important that you understand the implications of purdah and the restrictions in broad terms, in order to ensure that neither the council nor you personally are put at risk of challenge or prosecution.

You should bear in mind that even during the period before 18 March 2019, the conduct of all council business will become increasingly politicised and come under greater scrutiny as the elections approach. In practice, we are already working in the pre-election period.

Please pass on this guidance to any partners or external organisations who work closely with the council and who may be impacted by purdah restrictions.
